This year, Indonesian Day will present a famous Indonesian pop singer Katon Bagaskara as the headliner of the show. Katon Bagaskara also known as the founder and leader of Pop rock outfit KLA Project, which has scored numerous hits on Indonesian top 40 music charts.

Katon formed KLA Project in late 80's with Lilo, Adi and Ari. KLA Project aims to make their music "innovative, progressive and up to date"

KLA Project has been enjoying huge success with their blend of Indonesian pop and rock. They have released eight albums to date, with additional two 'Greatest Hits' albums.

They have also received few prestigious Awards such as BASF Award and Video Musik Indonesia (Indonesian Music Video Award).

As a solo artist, Katon has released three albums: "Self-titled’, ‘Gemini' and 'Harmoni menyentuh'. In 1996, Katon also released his book of collected poems entitled "Bulan Dibuai Awan". Harsanari (Sanskrit: Joy of Dance) is a San Francisco-based based company founded in 1995 to teach and perform Indonesian dance and to educate the American public about Indonesian dance and culture.

Since 1997, under the leadership of Michael Ogi, Harsanari has specialized in dances from Sunda, West Java, Indonesia. From classical masked dances and dramas that enact the great Hindu epics the Mahabharata and the Ramayana to the contemporary folk dance forms that incorporate martial arts movements, Sundanese dance is rich and complex.

Harsanari has participated in numerous Bay Area dance performances and was nominate for an Isadora Duncan Award for its 2000 Ethnic Dance Festival performance.


 
 

Gamelan Anak Swarasanti

Gamelan Anak Swarasanti has been playing around Santa Cruz and the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond since 1997, and is dedicated to bringing Balinese gamelan to a wide range of audience. The group was originally formed as a community offshoot of the UCSC Balinese Gamelan Swarasanti.

The name Swarasanti means the Sound of Peace and given by our first teacher I Nyoman Sedana. Anak Swarasanti means Child of Swarasanti.

Members of the group have studied under a number of master teachers including Wenten, Sumandhi, Sedana, Rai and Suweca and have a wide range of playing experience, from nearly 15 years to only a few months.


 
 

Bulantrisna

Ayu Bulantrisna Djelantik-Soejoto is a Medical Doctor, Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. She did a postgraduate study in Munich Germany and obtained a Ph.D. degree from University of Antwerp, Belgium. She is a guest lecturer and a teaching professor at the faculty of Medicine at Padjajaran University in Bandung, Indonesia. She currently works for WHO (World Health Oganization).

Through her Ayu Bulan Dance Workshop, ahe found opportunity to teach traditional Balinese dances with her own expression and experiments in movement. She has danced for many state guests, among others Queen Beatrix, President Bill & Hillary Clinton. She was instrumental in the formation of "Masyarakat Seni Pertunjukan Indonesia (MSPI)" or Indonesian Society for Performing Arts, a non-profits organization that strives to preserve the various performing arts from Indonesia.


 
 

Vannana Emirza Djohan

Vannana first performance as a Balinese dancer was the age of 14. She mastered the entire traditional cultural dance of Indonesia. Performing in major cities and television network. She was nominated to go international by the "Duta Seni" (talented art representative company) Performing in Amsterdam 1992, Sydney 1997, San Francisco 1997, Philippine 1998, Brunei Darussalam 2000 and Wellington - NZ 2004.

She also is an Aerobic Instructor, graduated from Puspita Martha (the head of Martha Tilaar). Recently, she asked by Celine Dion's coordinator to teach traditional dance and be a guest teacher for Celine's International tour.

For Indonesian Day 2005 she has choreographed and will be performing a contemporary Indonesian dance that combines the major islands of Indonesia into one dance in unity called Eksotik Khatulistiwa (the Exotic Equator)


 
 

PGB White Crane Silat San Francisco

In the 1970's young men and women from the West came to study White Crane Silat in Bogor under Suhu. Inspired by their commitment and interested in achieving a wider audience for his art, Suhu began to travel to the West to teach.

Soon White Crane Silat branches began to crop up in Germany, France and the United States. Enthusiastic students often traveled to Bogor to train under Suhu in Indonesia and some of Suhu's senior students traveled to the Western countries to provide instruction.

Margot Prado

Margot Lederer Prado has studied classical Indonesian dance, specializing in Sundanese (West Javanese Mask Dance) since 1974, when she began her studies under Pak Nugraha Sudiredja and Irawati Durban Ardjo and Balinese dance under Nyoman Wenton and I Made Suartini among others. She was then lives in Bandung from 1977-1978 and has performed at the Embassy in Washington and official function and arts festivals in both Indonesia and the United States.

She continues actively perform with Sundanese gamelan ensembles in Santa Cruz and San Jose.

Margot continues her studies from afar with Irawati Durban Ardjo, whose choreography of the Pa Tje Tje Somantri classical dance, Tari Koncaran, she will perform at the Indonesian Day 2005.

 
 

Janger Hip-Hop

Music: Gamelan Anak Swarasanti and recording of "Aku Padamu" by Tofu.

Janger is more a choral than a dance form. Six pairs of young man (called Kecak) and women (called Janger) dance and sing together, often about love. The men's gestures are rhythmical with the arms, fingers and shoulders, the women sway their fans. Sometimes a dramatic play is performed insides the space surrounded by the janger and kecak sitting facing each other on the stage.

In this version, the Indonesian martial arts called Pencak Silat as well as Hip-hop dance movements are inserting.

Rocky H. Twitchell established Liahona Warrior Arts in 1992.
Teaching Boxing, Jeet Kune Do Grappling, Pencak Silat, Filipino Arts, Muay Thai. This group is centered near Sacramento, CA.

about One People Voice

One People Voice, based in Oakland, CA, is a hybrid processional orchestra and chant ensemble. With roots in the Balinese baleganjur, the troupe utilizes gongs and drums from Bali, which are interwoven with other world and western instruments. One People Voice merges voice, percussion and other instrumentation, with theater and dance. Musical references also include the Far East, Africa, Eastern Europe and the Americas.

Integral to One People Voice is the mythic theater, which incorporates kecak (pronounced KETjack), also known as monkey chant. This very physical theater draws from the traditions of Bali and from many other cultures. Performances are magical, joyful, alive and full surprise.

Christina Sunardi: She is currently a graduate student in Department of Music at the University of California, Berkeley. She is currently researching East Javanese music and dance. Christina began her study of Indonesian performing art in 1997, when she studied abroad in Yogjakarta, Central Java for one year. In San Francisco Bay Area. Christina performs regularly with Gamelan Sekar Jaya.

A 27-year-old Executive Assistant to the CEO in a high tech company in San Francisco is a recent winner of Element's Asian American Idol 2005 and has performed at the Miss Asian American Pageant 2005.
